Do you really know what you think you know?

It looks like President Obama is toughly fighting against rumors regarding his health insurance reform. http://www.whitehouse.gov/realitycheck/

It is bad that most people on this planet, or at least in United States, are not scientists or engineers. Most people tend not to get information from the very source but information flying around them. For example, they may ask friends around about traffic rules in Texas but not visit the website of Texas Dept. of Public Safety and read the drivers handbook.

Stand together for a free Iran

by Forrest Sheng Bao http://fsbao.net

We shall stand together for a free Iran. Join any events where you can gather together with people to show your support to a free Iran.

You may say, oh, dictators in Iran can't hear us. How do you know that? How do you governments and media are not passing our anger to Iranian dictators?

You may say, oh, our voice won't change. Let's read this poem carved on the New England Holocaust Memorial

They came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jew, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the trace unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

My idol: dual PhD in EE and CS, plus a bunch of *wonderful* publications

by Forrest Sheng Bao http://fsbao.net

"Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me... Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful...that's what matters to me." - Steve Jobs, on Gates and Microsoft, Wall Street Journal, summer 1993

I had a dream when I first went to graduate school. I planned to get an M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering and a PhD in Computer Science in 3 years from Texas Tech, having so called top 90 engineering program in the nation, and then get another PhD in Electrical Engineering in another 2 years from somewhere else, like UT (When I say UT, T means Texas, and UT means UT Austin.)

Now, since I wasted a year on searching a girlfriend, I have to add one more year for this crazy plan. Today, I saw the CV of a guy in Ole Miss.

Today is Jun 4, 20 years after Jun 4, 1989

I will never forget Jun. 4, 1989, the day when Communism Chinese government massacred thousand of peaceful students with tanks and machine guns on the Tiananmen square. Long live freedom!

If you can not open that page, and a lot of websites, think about why.

Loving a university by seeing it?

by Forrest Sheng Bao http://fsbao.net

"They date. They talk, their likes and their dislikes." - Movie "Enchanted", 2007

“I would trade all of my technology for an afternoon with Socrates.” - Steve Jobs

My sister is going to visit McGill U. tomorrow. She wants to see whether she can "like it."

Maybe I am too old to understand how the next generation thinks - I'm 6 years older than her. But I just wonder. How can someone love a university by seeing it? Can you love a girl after seeing her? You may want to have sex with her but not sufficiently love her.

If I am gonna choose, I only care whether I can meet more "smart" people who can inspire me wonderful ideas. Just as Steve Jobs said “I would trade all of my technology for an afternoon with Socrates.”

My Belief

by Forrest Sheng Bao http://fsbao.net

"Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind." -Albert Einstein, "Science, Philosophy and Religion: a Symposium", 1941

"We believe that among God’s good gifts are human minds capable of critical thought and that the failure to fully employ this gift is a rejection of the will of our Creator." -“The Clergy Letter Project”, http://www.butler.edu/clergyproject/rel_evol_sun.htm

I believe there is a God who created the universe and loves us. I believe the God sent his one and only Son to the world to die for us in order to save us from our sins. Thus, I believe the God does not want us to lie and to interpret the Bible literally, especially on some apparent scientific truths.

Sigh. OLPC may eventually switch from Linux to Windows XP

by Forrest Sheng Bao http://fsbao.net

I haven't confirmed this news. But I do believe Microsoft is doing something to make OLPC project switch to Windows. I think a project should keep its rightness and kindly goal. A project alternating its dream because of money issue will lose the support from its community and die.

Great news, Linux zealots! Two industrial giants, Amazon and Adobe just make nice with Linux users.

Vive la liberté: I am burying my MSN and Yahoo accounts

For he today that sheds his blood with me, shall be my brother. - St. Crispen's Day Speech, HENRY V, by William Shakespeare, 1599

Brothers,

I know you love freedom, so I think you will fight with me, for our future free market. This is a war, to secure the blessing of liberty to ourselves and our children. I know this is tough, but "Freedom is not free".
